Schedule and Content

Dear student of Art Systems: A Global Introduction

Welcome on the course

Note: At this point there is not yet enough information about COVID-19 restrictions during the course week - including travel restrictions from Aalto University, where I work. The course might be on Zoom. This does not change its textual content (see below).

Instructions:

Always read well the text(s) of the session. We will discuss it/them and you will have to comment on it/them during our session. You might also have to know its/their content to be able to do an assignment, so please, always try to crack them at least some way before coming to the session. You will not survive the course without reading.

Schedule and the texts:

Monday 17.1, 10-13

1. Akira Amagasaki, "Art Outside of Life and Art as Life"

2. Chinua Achebe, "The Igbo World and Its Art"

Tuesday 18.1, 10-13

3. Megumi Sakabe, "Subject of Absence and Absence of the Critique"

4. Christine Battersby, "Gender and Genius" (Excerpt)

Wednesday 19.1, 10-13

5. Max Ryynänen, "A Philosophy of Central European Art: The History of An Institution and Its Global Competitors" (Introduction and Chapter 1)

Martha Woodmansee, "Genius and Copyright" (from the book Rereading Aesthetics)

Thursday 20.1, 10-13

6. A Philosophy of Central European Art (Chapter 2, see the link above)

Friday 21.1, 10-13

Students present the outcome of the course - from their own perspective. More on this on the first session.
